“You can’t be serious,” Estevez said. “I’m offering you a way out. One that costs you nothing and with no strings attached.”

“Way I see it,” Felton said, “is that we’re doing you a favor. We leave town. We never mention this—specifically, your part in this—to anyone. You get off scot-free and don’t even have to skip town. So what’s in it for us?”

“What’s in it for you, Mr. Felton, is that I don’t incapacitate you and turn you over to the prince.” “Maybe you do, and maybe you don’t,” Felton replied. “That’s your line. But the way I see it, there’s three of us and only one of you. So maybe we just knock you out and turn your stinking carcass over to the prince.”

“Um, Felton...” Antigone tried to interject. If he heard her, he gave no sign of it. Instead, he advanced upon the open doorway.

“And why would the prince possibly be interested in me?” Estevez asked, storm clouds gathering in the lines of his face.

“Because you engineered this whole damned mess and tried to bum him to ash in the process!” Felton shouted. “You brought Graves and Jervais together, knowing that they would find a ‘mutual interest’—knowing full well what that interest would be and what would come of it. For all I know, you were even the one to point out to Jervais that this might be an opportune time to dispose of the potential rival he had in Antigone.”

“A fascinating little conjecture, I’m sure,” Estevez replied calmly. “But I am uncertain on one small point: Why would the prince believe such wild tales from such—and I trust you will pardon my saying so—disreputable characters? Perhaps you simply do not know Calebros as well as I do. I think back with great fondness to the evenings of pleasant social diversions that we shared before his... unfortunate accident. I think you will find him a very practical man. I tell you this frankly— even if he were inclined to give any shred of credence to your fables, he would still have to have you destroyed. He really has no choice in this matter. His people and his reputation demand it. I trust we understand one another?”

“I’ll tell you what I ‘understand,’” Felton began, closing on Estevez. But he was interrupted by a sudden jarring impact. He rebounded from the open doorway as if it were a solid wall. Shaking his head to clear it, Felton started forward again. Had Estevez blindsided him with something? The air in the doorway had turned translucent, and was rapidly swimming towards opaqueness.

“What the hell?” Felton put out a hand and it met resistance in the open doorway. It was as if he had bumped into a pane of foggy glass. He put both hands against it and rattled it. It was solid. He spread his arms wide, feeling for the barrier’s edges, but he could detect no gap and no seam where it met the doorjamb.

He also noticed that it was getting harder to make out Estevez’s outline through the barrier.
